Exploring Gay Movies: Gay Movies to Watch
When it comes to movies, I’m usually drawn to the fantastical, the extraordinary, and the futuristic. Give me a superhero saving the world, a wizard casting spells, or a spaceship exploring distant galaxies, and I’m hooked. But as a gay man, I’m always thrilled when I see LGBTQ+ representation in these genres. Whether it’s a subtle nod or a full-blown storyline, seeing characters who reflect my identity in worlds of magic and adventure makes those stories even more special.

That said, I’ll admit that romantic comedies and chick flicks aren’t usually my go-to. I won’t actively seek them out, but if someone else puts one on, I’ll inevitably find myself sitting down, getting drawn into the story, and enjoying every moment. There’s something undeniably charming about these films, even if they’re not my typical preference. Even though I will never admit to enjoying them when asked about my kind of movies.
Recently, I’ve been thinking about exploring more gay movies—both classics and new releases—to broaden my horizons and celebrate stories that center on LGBTQ+ experiences. Here are a few that have caught my attention:
Gay Classics I Want to Watch
1. Brokeback Mountain (2005)
This film is often hailed as a groundbreaking piece of LGBTQ+ cinema. Some may rank it as one of the best LGBT movies to watch. It tells the poignant story of two cowboys who fall in love but struggle with societal expectations. It’s a heart-wrenching tale that I feel is essential viewing.
2. Moonlight (2016)
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Picture, “Moonlight” is a coming-of-age story that explores identity, family, and love. Its raw and emotional storytelling has made it a modern classic.
Gay Movies that I’ve watched.
1. Paris is Burning” (1990)
This documentary delves into the ballroom culture of New York City in the 1980s, showcasing the lives of LGBTQ+ people of colour. It’s a powerful and influential film that defines almost everything you see on RuPaul’s Drag Race and gay culture.
2. Call Me By Your Name (2017)
Set in 1980s Italy, this film is a beautiful and sensual exploration of first love. The stunning visuals and heartfelt performances have made it a favourite among many. I must have watched it twice and thinking of giving it another go.
Upcoming Gay Movies I’m Excited About
1. Red, White & Royal Blue (2023)
Based on the bestselling novel, this romantic comedy follows the son of the U.S. president and a British prince as they fall in love. It promises to be a fun and heartwarming watch.
2. The History of Sound (TBA)
This upcoming film, starring Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal, is set during World War I and tells the story of two men who fall in love while recording the lives and music of their countrymen.
3. Fellow Travelers (2023)
A limited series rather than a movie, this show explores the romance between two men during the McCarthy era. With its historical setting and political intrigue, it feels like a must-watch.
